Illinois Marriage Records
Illinois Marriage Records are filed at the Division of Vital Records under the Illinois Department of Public Health. It provides service in verifying facts of marriage records that took place in the state of Illinois. This service is only available to marriages from 1962 through the current index date.
A fee of $5.00 is charged for the verification of each Illinois Marriage Records file. This is not refundable as it is treated as a search fee. A ‘no record statement’ from their search is a recognized verification of single marital status. Copies of Illinois marriage records are neither available from the Vital Records Office nor the Reference Unit of the Illinois State Archives.
To obtain copies of original Illinois marriage records from the state agencies, the subject marriage must be listed on the Statewide Marriage Index. They can then be retrieved from the Illinois Regional Archives Depository System which goes under the Illinois State Archives or directly from the county clerks where the marriage took place.
For all practical purposes, the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) is the main government agency for public records as opposed to the Vital Records Division. Free searches are available at IRAD and its holdings include marriage records of over 70 of the 102 counties in Illinois but fees are levied when records are found. It also provides uncertified copies of marriage records only.
County Clerks are the official custodians of marriage records filed in Illinois. They are the only officials authorized to issue certified copies of Illinois Marriage Records. Copy fees are not standardized and vary from one county to another.
