Texas Marriage Records

Texas marriage rate is estimated at 8 per 1000 of total population. That's been in decline for the past good number of years now. It's not high by any standards but with a large population in excess of 20 million, that translates to quite a lot of marriages in absolute terms.

The function of maintaining vital records for public enquiry and use is headed by the State Vital Statistics Bureau. This office reports into the Texas Department of State Health Services. It has in excess of 6 million Texas Marriage Records under its charge along with other vital records namely Divorce, Birth and Death.

The Texas Vital Statistics Bureau cannot issue certified copies of Marriage License or other form of records. It can only provide Verification Letters stating whether or not a marriage was recorded with the state of Texas and are available for marriages that occurred from 1966 to 2008. If no records are found to a request for a marriage verification letter, a single-status letter will be issued in its place.

Certified copies of Texas Marriage Records can only be obtained from the County Clerk's office where the Marriage License was granted. For marriages prior to 1966, verification letters are also only available from their office of origin. The addresses and other contact information of the various County Clerk Offices in Texas are available on the Vital Statistics Bureau website.

Marriage Index may also be purchased or downloaded for free from the Vital Statistics Bureau website. They list marriages that were recorded in Texas but are not in themselves legal documents and so cannot be considered official substitutes for Marriage License or other marital records. They should be treated strictly as informational aids only.

Requests for Marriage Records of other states cannot be entertained at the Texas State repository. They will be redirected to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) connect cross-state search requests with the particular state agency at hand through their network of links.
